Mid-week Lunch Run - Captains Flat - 24 July 2024

The line-up of classic sports cars and saloons in front of the Captains Flat Hotel was a sight to
behold! An invitation was extended to the Vintage Sports Car Club to join us on the July mid
week lunch run to Captains Flat and the range of classic cars they brought to our assembly
point in Queanbeyan certainly attracted attention. Rather than having me list the cars, just
check out the accompanying photos.

All up we had over thirty diners assemble in the main bar (once the longest bar in the
southern hemisphere) for lunch and much discussion. It was a great opportunity to share the
joys and trials of classic car ownership with fellow enthusiasts, particularly given that, per-
chance, all of the Vintage Sports Car Club vehicles there on the day were from British makers
(Jaguar, Aston Martin, MG, Sunbeam and Humber).

A notable return to our club’s Triumph fleet was Graeme Howieson’s nice dark blue Stag,
back on the road again thanks to the efforts of Jack, Paul and Ian. Graeme and Sue enjoyed a
chauffeur driven ride with Paul behind the wheel. I’m sure Paul remembered that he was not
driving his Triumph 2500 rally car!

Despite our rather large contingent, together with another car club, a few other travellers and
locals, the limited number of hotel staff did a fine job in serving behind the bar and preparing
and delivering meals. The hotel has only recently come under new management and the new
owner is doing a fine job in restoring the premises while retaining the period character of the
building. Quite sensibly, the menu is limited but covers all tastes and is reasonably priced.
Let’s hope they are able to make a go of it.

Everyone enjoyed safe travel to and from the venue on a much-improved road.
